The US M79 has been introduced to the amercian army in 1961,
used with several ammunition such anti tank, fragment, rockets, smoke grenade, etc.....
it was named thumper due to the unique sound of the shot, Each team of 10 men had to have a grenadier equipped with an M79
used till the 90's and still on duty in particular cases, has been replaced now with the M203 stand alone or configurable launcher
The SAWED-OFF version , was a modified M79 by cutting the stock and barrel, made to make the lancher lighter and easy to carry,
some of the VIETCONG soldiers had the short launcher in the waist after taking it from the dead USA soldiers.....
